Dyskusja o 1 Month Update - Cordless Kobalt 40 Max Lawn Mower

- Are you still happy with the Kobalt 40? We're looking at it, so just wanted to check in. Thanks for the details review!
- On the model with just the one battery I had a problem with the battery not staying seated against the contacts; it would jar loose with the slightest bump and the mower would stop running. Saw somewhere online that the fix was to remove one of the springs in the battery compartment and after doing that, it has worked flawlessly for the past year. I'm so glad because it is a great little mower now that the battery stays seated.
- how much are those batterys.
- Seems to be a cool mower but I'll probably never stop using my gas engines. Always love that sound when they get under a load.
- 40 VOLT, 4.0 AMP for $89 at Lowes (7/4/2015).  http://www.lowes.com/pd_506883-53393-KB+440-06_0__?productId=50141050#BVRRWidgetID
Just got my mower yesterday, so I'm not ready for a spare, spare battery, yet.
- We paid WAY TOO MUCH for this machine.  The plastic area you mentioned you were not sure how long it would last was not our first issue it was the actual carbon frame that holds the mower bag together and in place that broke withing 20 days of use.  Lowes sells this line and the purchase only covers 15 days.  Seriously you sell a $519 lawn mower and only will take returns for the first 15 days CHEAP.  We also find that the power of this overpriced model does only a moderate job as we need to mow the area twice to actually get all the grass cut .  Kobalt has a five year warranty and we will see how they stand behind this mower.
- Great! I have just got one and testing it on my lawn now.
Thank you so much for your info. Very helpful. I will keep following your post.
Thanks again!!!
- Hi! Pete:

Great vide and Info regarding this KOBALT Elec Lawn Mower.
So you have owned this mower more than a year. What is your experience with this mower? Still highly recommend it? Everything works good!
I am trying to buy this mower. Just want to know your suggestion.
Thanks!

Al
- I'm in the Market for a NEW Lawn Mower. I went to Lowes and saw three different types of these Kobalts. I think the one you have is going for $199.00? There's a "Top of the Line" for $499.00. I'm tempted to buy one, but it's the ole' proverbial "Battery Recharge Dilemma" that's got me thinking Gas over Electric? Thank you for posting, I think it a very unique concept to the age old gas lawn mower!
- A lear later... is the mower still performing well? How are the batteries holding up? I just got one of these today. Mowed about 1/3 of an acre and it seemed to do well.
- This mower looks amazingly similar to the Greenworks twin blade electric mower.  You won't find it at Lowe's anymore. Lowes now sales the Kobalt. Something tells me it's the same marketing company using the Kobalt tag and with the same manufacturer.  Let's see if it stays around.  BTW, Greenworks now has an even larger capacity lith ion battery than the 40 volt.  Any one interested in getting an electric mower, go with a brand that the batteries are interchangeable with the other tools.

I like my Greenworks 19"  I can't always get to my lawn before the grass is too high (5" or higher).  The mower chomps through it and the lawn looks great. I'm starting my 3rd season and the cut still looks great.  However, I did notice that if the grass gets too high, one has to overlap the passes of your mower because the wheels press down tall grass and it later pops up leaving telltale evidence suggesting you missed a spot.

Oh yeah, I love just charging my battery and not dealing with emptying and refilling with oil my mower or constantly worrying about running out of gas. Enjoy your Kobalt, Pete!
- how big is your lawn and about how long does it take you to mow it
- Thanks so much for taking you time to post this, very informative and well done! C Reynolds, Lynchburg OH
- I bought one of these last spring. It does well on my lawn that's around 1/3 acre. I start with the low cap battery in the first position, and the high cap in the second. When the low cap runs out, I stop, and put it in the garage to cool, then go back to mowing. When the high cap runs out, I put the low cap on charge, and take an hour break. After the hour break I put the high cap on the charger and go back to mowing with the low cap again and that usually finishes my lawn.

How much does it cost to charge the batteries? I have a KillAWatt electric meter I got at Menards, which you can plug in to an outlet, and plug in the appliance to it and can see how much electricity the device uses. One charge for both batteries doesn't even register any $. I had to run through FOUR charges of both batteries till the KillAWatt finally said I'd used 1 KWH or .08 cents of electricity! Amazing, So you use negligible electricity charging the batteries.

Wet grass? This unit does not do well. Clogs badly and you're stopping to clean it every few minutes. I even tried cutting the deck away on each side and that does not help. I haven't tried using the bagger feature tho. Will try that this year and replace the cut away deck sides and see if that makes a difference.

Heavy/tall grass? Unit does not do well. You'll have to mow over each row twice. But it works. I like it so far. It's easier to push than my last gas self propelled mower was to control. Biggest plus? NO vibration. My gas mower used to make my hands go numb, this mower not at all.

Another plus is there's not a great amount of vacuum power as with gas mowers, so if you run over the top of a mouse, mole, snake etc, they are not sucked up into the blades and killed. The downside tho is that since there's not great suction, heavy grass must be mowed twice.

Also the unit is very light. Once you're done mowing you can easily fold the handle, and pick it up and carry it inside. Which btw, you never want to leave this unit sitting outside in the weather.

I would like to try the single battery/single blade unit some time and see if it does better in wet heavy grass with its side discharge.
- Love the Gopro view, very funny. I'm going to go buy one of these today, hate buying gas no matter how cheap it is. We have 1/3 of an acre so this would be great, and we can put it on our lowes card.
- OK you need to show at what height you are trying to mow your lawn at because this is directly related to how long the batteries will last. I live in Hawaii and it's been found that it works best to mow at the lowest setting as our lawns are a mixture of different grasses and weeds. Your lawn looks all one species and it it seems you are mowing at a taller height. Also you are bagging which will allow the batteries to last longer.
- Do you have any problems with the batteries coming loose?  I have the 19 inch kobalt and the battery comes loose after 2nd use.  I am on my second one.  Would like to hope the larger mower is better.
- Pete, check this Youtube out.  The batteries are the same, and worth watching, because you may need to repair a bad battery.  It pays to know how to to this, because these buggers are going to be expensive.  Usually there are just a few cells that are bad, and with a multimeter, and product number, it is just a matter of replacing the bad cells to get a lithium batter back up to speed.  I figure that in four or five more years, the cost of these batteries will be considerably less expensive.
Watts Inside? - Greenworks 40v4ah Lithium battery pack opening #29282
- Pete, I just ordered the GreenWorks 25302 cordless mower, which is basically the same mower as yours.  The makeup and lipstick is somewhat different, but the electric motor and double blades with metal blade housing is the same.  However, I noticed one thing about the Kobalt make that is differentf with the GreenWorks.  And that is the twin batteries.  With the 25302 it comes with two 40V 4Ah batteries, and yours has one 4Ah, and one 2Ah.   That may make a bit of a difference with time and distance.

I'm also going to pay close attention to the charging process and how much to use each battery before switching off to the other one.  This is to ensure that the batteries get a longer life.  There is a trick to this, especially with Lithium ion and lead acid batteries.  They both last longer if not depleted fully.  Also, I suspect that 40V 2Ah battery is going to make a difference in the long run.  I'm glad I got into the GreenWorks special sales incentive for this model and the 15% 4th of July savings from CPO, which made the total cost just a hair over $300.
- atleast this one comes with 2 batteries... Ive seen some videos on here where the mowers didnt last long enough to cut a small yard... although, I suspect the batteries wont last very long.  they are EXPENSIVE! I looked :) For now, I will stick with gas.
